Ceremonial

All soldiers in the Queen’s Guard are combat soldiers from regular infantry and cavalry regiments.  At this time the Foot Guards are provided in alternation by

            Nijmegen Company, 1st Grenadier Guards

            1st Welsh Guards

Cavalry Guards are provided by

The Life Guards and the Blues and Royals

Contrary to popular belief, ceremonial duty at the Queen’s residences (Buckingham and St. James’s Palaces) is not the sole prerogative of the Guards. Any regiment of the line can provide contingents additional to the above.

Thanks to a 450-year history, nothing about the British Army is particularly simple. This is also true of he Queen’s Guards. Interested readers should do their own research.

Reroling To Provide more troops for afghanistan

  • 2 Challenger 2 Squadrons to Combat Vehicles Reconnaissance (Tracked)
  • 2 Artillery SP 155mm regiments to Light Gun
  • 5 Artillery SP 155mm batteries to UAVs
  • 1 Air Defense Artillery High Velocity Missile Battery to UAVs
  • 2 General Support Engineer regiments to Close Support
  • Several third line logistics units to provide Afghanistan support

This process continues into 2009, with more MBT Regiments putting their equipment in storage and shifting to other roles for Afghanistan.
