Defense Budget 2009 ~ $80-million

Both the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Force fall under the Minister for National Security.

Unlike most countries, which prohibit employment of the military on police duties except in emergencies, Trinidad & Tobago Defense Force provides routine support to the TT Police Service because of a dangerous law-and-order situation. Support is given under the Inter Agency Task Force and the Special Anti-Crime Unit.

The TTDF is reorganizing from its previous regiment-based structure to an army. The Air Wing is now designated as the Air Guard. The reserve structure is being strengthened with additional permanent personnel and new barracks are to be built for the 2nd Battalion, TT Regiment.

Major land bases are Omega, Teteron, Camp Ogden, and Cumuto Barracks. Fixed wing aircraft are at Piarco Airport, Port of Spain and Crown Point, Tobago, and helicopters at Chauarames. The Air Guard has benefited from acquisition of US aircraft provided for narcotics interdiction.
